During surgery for a combat wound, Dedov's heart stops, but doctors manage to literally bring him back from the brink. Doctors soon discharge the retired soldier, who plans to recuperate and spend time with his recently born great-grandson.Dedov's friends, General Rastorguev and Colonel Nakhabtsev, are searching for the dangerous terrorist Burkhan. According to intelligence, he is plotting a terrorist attack in St. Petersburg. To prevent tragedy, Nakhabtsev suggests Rastorguev conduct an operation codenamed "Old Friend"—inserting a former comrade of Burkhan's into his group. The agent is Nikitin, Dedov's son-in-law, who, in turn, is not warned of his relative's involvement in the dangerous scheme. According to the cover story, Nikitin became involved in drug trafficking, killed a fellow soldier, deserted, and is now wanted. At some point, the operation begins to go awry...To save Nikitin's life and restore his reputation, Dedov is forced to act independently, without relying on the support of the army and police.
